V.P. Skulachev

Dear Readers!

February 21, 2010 is the 75th Anniversary of Vladimir Petrovich Skulachev, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, European and other Academies, Director of Belozersky Institute of Physico-Chemical Biology of Moscow State University, Head of the Faculty of Bioinformatics and Bioengineering of Moscow State University, leading scientist of the Center of Mitoengineering of Moscow State University, and not last, Editor-in-Chief of our Journal. All scientific activity of our Jubilee for more than 50 years is devoted to investigation of mitochondria and establishing bioenergetics – the science of energy transformations in living cells. During last few years the main field of studies of Vladimir Petrovich is the development of the mitochondrial theory of aging. Novel mitochondrially-targeted compounds, “Skulachev-ions”, which are able to cure many diseases of old age, to elongate life-span of laboratory animals, and, possibly, to cancel the aging program, are being developed and tested under his guidance.

We all are deeply interested that this study be continued and wish for the Jubilee good health and success in all fields of his many activities for the benefit of Science.

In the current and next issues of Biochemistry (Moscow), a set of articles devoted to recent achievements in the study of “Skulachev-ions” will be published. The authors of these articles congratulate Vladimir Petrovich with his birthday, wish him luck, happiness, and joy and dedicate these papers to him.
